Comment

  • Museum's label text, 2011:
    The close observation and sensitive modeling in this retrospective self-portrait demonstrate the artist's debt to eighteenth-century French portrait sculpture, such as that of Jean-Antoine Houdon. The quick, spontaneous working of the clay, however, links Carrier-Belleuse to his most famous student, Auguste Rodin; in 1881 Rodin made a portrait of his teacher in Sèvres porcelain, which was apparently based on this work.
